The universe calls for us to do our best. When we do do our best, the universe delivers outcomes beyond our wildest imagination. This true story illustrates this point.
About seven years ago, a brilliant, wealthy, and highly credentialed engineer in India needed to solidify relationships with his clients and partners in London. He made the decision to move his family of three little children to London for three years.
His family lived a life of luxury matched for his level of success. Among several domestic help crew one young mother of a nine-year-old son stood out for her sincerity, pleasantness, and diligence. She was more like family than a maid.
When the family shared their three-year relocation plan to London, the maid surprised them by asking to go with them. She had a young son, and she would not be able to take him. She explained that her mother was the primary caretaker of the son because in addition to the engineer’s family, this young mother also did work in other homes. Still, they asked her to consult her mother and family.
Taking this young woman with them for three years required serious considerations. First, the engineer would have to buy tickets. Second, he would need to secure a visa for her to travel, work, and live in London. Third, she would not be able to return for three years.
Poverty is a dark master who requires sacrifice to unshackle life. The maid would pay the price of leaving her family to be in London alone for three years. Her gain would be to earn a great deal more and be able to afford to send her son to a good school and secure a better life for her mother. She was ready for sacrificing her closeness to her family.
A few months later, they all relocated to London. There too, the maid quickly became popular in the engineer’s family’s social circle. Everyone liked the young woman’s upbeat and kind demeanor. Many asked if she could work for them when this family returned to India.
Among the people who visited the home was a wealthy, old, and alone restaurant owner. She had a trusted helper who also had a similarly positive attitude of optimism and was loyal and good-hearted.
Over time and many visits, this boy and the maid made a friendly but silent connection. Neither made any advances for the fear of annoying their respective employers.
In no time, nearly two years had passed. The engineer’s family wanting their maid to have the best life alternatives, shared alternatives with her. With so many people willing to employ and pay her good wages, did she want to stay in London? If she wanted to do so, they would file for her visa extension. Or she could return to India with them and be with her son and mother.
The family gave her time to think and encouraged her to even meet some of the people who had offered to give her work. This included the older restaurant owner lady.
The older lady had seen the spark between her helper and the maid. After their meeting, the elderly woman encouraged the maid to meet the boy.
The boy knew of the elderly woman’s meeting with the maid. He had already expressed his desire to grow his connection. The maid met the restaurant-helper boy. They had a genuine spark and warmth toward each other.
After a couple of weeks of deliberation, the maid appealed to the engineer’s wife for advice.
The maid wanted to stay and make a new life in London. She also wanted the engineer and his wife to screen the restaurant boy’s intentions because he had proposed marriage to her. Her son’s father had never been in their lives since before the son’s birth. She wanted to live here and continue to send money to create a better life for her son and mother.
The engineer and his wife spoke with the restaurant owner, the elderly lady about the boy’s character and values. He was a good hearted honest and kind person and was the owner’s right hand trusted man. She thought he would make a good match for the maid. Further she said that she could employ the maid for her own care since she lived alone at home.
The young maid with a young son who left home to earn money to give her son and mother a decent life was now contemplating a London future.
The talks moved forward. The engineer and his wife screened the boy and approved.
As God alone could make this miracle happen, life pivoted for this young mother. She married the restaurant boy. The restaurant owner lady employed her at home for her care and company. She gave responsibility to run the restaurant to the boy, who was already managing all the work. The new husband liked the maid so much that he was willing to adopt her son and care for the grandmother.
Happy with the performance of the restaurant and care at home, the now retired and declining-health restaurant owner lady called the couple in and gave them a totally expected surprise. She told them that after she passes, she wanted the boy to have the restaurant. She repeated to him that he had been the most loyal, enthusiastic, upbeat, and kind presence in her life for a long time, and this was her wish for him.
When she died of old age and natural causes a couple of years later, this young couple did not know if the restaurant owner had kept her commitment. The young man continued to run the restaurant and the maid continued to keep the house clean even if the owner was no longer around.
One fateful day, they got called to settle the old woman’s affairs. To their deep relief, she had kept her word and left the restaurant to her trusted young man.
The universe brings light, color, and music when we play by its rules. The story did not end there.
The old lady also left the entire rest of her estate, home, investments, and belongings to this young couple.
Think about the poor, young, and uneducated woman doing chores in multiple homes just to pay rent, care for an elderly mother, and educate a young son.
By the miracle of God or luck, or probability and chance, or the gift of the universe, she was now the owner of millions of UK Pounds.
The husband adopted his new wife’s son and brought the mother-in-law and son to live with them in London.
The universe delivers magnificent light when we give it our best. Doing the best that we can do is all that we can do.
The maid and her husband wished all well, lived with great gratitude, and worked with diligence. They were honest, loyal, and fair and lived with high values regardless of how much they earned.
Today, they still work just as hard. Now they care for their staffs and inspire them to shine and care for their families.
The warmth and goodness of this story do not stop here. The newly wealthy mistress who was once a maid, her visits the engineer and his family every time she is in India. Like a pilgrimage, she goes to express her gratitude.
Her fashion and accessories choices, from clothing to watches, and phones to jewelry, all are the most prestigious brands. She wears them all with flair and charm. The maid of the past now is indeed a fashion icon.
In love and laughter, in warmth and affection, the engineer’s family teases her for how wealthy she is. Her response, expressed with sincerity and humility is still endearing. “You gave me a chance and opened doors to change my life,” she repeats every time.
Of course, the engineer and his family are many folds wealthier, but the bond of love and respect, gratitude and humility shows that riches come and go, but human bonds reign supreme.
This real life story holds the time-tested inspiration, that all we can do is to be the best we can be in the moment knowing what we know at that time.
What happens next is out of our hands and beyond our comprehension, but the possibilities for goodness are limitless.
Live life with integrity and humility. If you can do this with pure intention, you will make a call on the universe that it cannot deny, to do well by you.
